William (Vigleik) Maakestad was one of the early settlers in the Radcliffe community. As a young man, he was a sailor and continued in that capacity until the age of 20 years, when he sailed for America. He came to Lee County, Illinois on 25 June 1880 and remained in that community for four years. He came to Iowa in 1884, where he bought the Henry Gair place. The following year, he married Hervorg Jurine (Helen) Engelson. Helen died in 1907. William married a second time, in 1908, to Martha Serina Oakland.

He was the son of Mikkel Jonson and Kristi Olsdtr of Måkestad Farm, Ullensvang Parish, Hordaland County, Norway. Jon married Marita in 1822. Marita was born in 1793 and died in 1881. She was the daughter of Jon Olson and Sigrid Olsdtr from Aga Farm, sub-farm 1, Ullensvang Parish, Hordaland County, Norway.

Vigleik Sjurson and Brita Larsdtr lived on Måkestad Farm, Ullensvang Parish, Hordaland County, Norway. Vigleik was born in 1780 and died in 1852. Vigleik was the son of Sjur Vigleikson and Brita Tomasdtr. He married Brita Larsdtr in 1810. Brita was born in 1785 and died in 1872. Brita Larsdtr was from Reiseter Farm, sub-farm 4, Ullensvang Parish, Hordaland County, Norway.
