Iowa Family Stories

Radcliffe, Iowa Water Tower

A small community in north central Iowa is the home of more than 600 people. Many of these residents are the descendents of Norwegian immigrants, who came to America in the second half of the 19th century. They came to America for a better life. They came with strong beliefs in freedom and religion. They came to the midwest as farmers. They settled in Iowa, in Hamilton and Hardin Counties around the community of Radcliffe. They came to work hard and raise families. The descendents of these immigrants now number in the many thousands and live throughout the United States. No matter their occupation or location or life style, however, they all share a common thread back to the Radcliffe area and ultimately, Norway.

These immigrants leave us many stories, family stories. Stories about their lives in America and their lives in Norway. This website will attempt to document these family stories.

I am Rolene Britson, the great-great granddaughter of Sjur Ingebrigtson and Martha Knudsdtr Britson and Eli Asselina Halvorsdtr and Hans Ivarson Hinderaker and Ole Peterson and Bertha Johannesdtr Peterson and Lyder Osmundsen and Olene Maria Jonsdtr. My ancestors came from Norway to Lincoln Township in Hamilton County, Iowa. They farmed just west of Radclffe. They attended the Bethany Norwegian-American Lutheran Church. My ancestors have left many stories. I enjoy collecting these stories. I hope that you enjoy reading them. I would also like to read your family stories.
